Having toured with Sisters of Mercy in 2008 and on their own ever since, Hypernova are an example of what hard work can do for a band. Originally from Tehran, Iran (yes, really), they are at the helm of what consists of the Iranian rock scene, which saw many secret basement shows and out of town villa performances in order to avoid the prying eyes of narcs looking to squelch a good time in the name of moral law and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Having formed in the late 1990’s, there wasn’t much of a reason to keep it on the DL until Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s ban of all Western music from state-run airwaves in December 2005 in a reversal of reforms made under his more liberal predecessor. You think it sucks to get the cops called on you by the neighbors during Jesus Lizard cover band practice? Try having the shadows of public flogging or perhaps death in the recesses of your mind during practice or a show and then let’s talk about “unfair”. Now that these hyper-boys have their hyper-visas, they are hyper-touring until further hyper-notice, so thank your lucky stars you’re wherever you are, be thankful there’s still people who are willing to take real chances for art and music, and consider getting your ass to Meridian this Wednesday to see these cats do their thing.
Hypernova will be performing this Wednesday, March 25 at the Meridian 1503 Chartres Houston, Texas 77003.
Openers will be locals The McKenzies and Guitars.
