These shows will definitely have some highlights if you’re into doing your homework and checking out which music you like first before hand. First thing though -Have Fun, Be Safe, and don’t eat the Brownies – we pasted everything Super Happy wrote on their myspace about the event. Peace

Description

Howdy folks! Hope you are as excited about SXSW Overflow Fest as we are! There have been lots of add ons and changes since my last email, so check the calendar below and come on out to some shows! We’ve got some really amazing performers this year including a very naughty evening this Friday with the naked bike ride rally at 8pm, Bike Porn 3 at 11pm and the legendary Blowfly the original dirty rapper at midnight. There are far too many bands (110 performers at last count) for me to go through and tell you the highlights (like having a performer from Ireland on St. Pat’s day for example!), I’ve tried to list the genres of most of the bands (or at least what they put down as their genres on MySpace), but the best thing to do is go through and listen to the band’s websites and make a detailed checklist of the ones you really like! Its $8 for one night or an amazing $25 for the whole 14 day festival (which by the way runs March 11th through 24th). and here is the story of the festival: Every year thousands of bands from all over the world come into Texas for the South By Southwest music conference in Austin during mid-March. Many of those bands are looking for shows in nearby cities to fill out their tours, and competition for gigs is fierce! Super Happy Fun Land happily crams as many traveling performers as possible into our annual festival, bringing many performers to Houston that might not otherwise have a place to play, so come out and support up and coming new talent! There are also lots of other great events on the horizon, so scroll down and get the scoop!

March 11th-24th!

“Amazing Firstman’s bluesy voice worked perfectly with the roots rocker numbers, and, when he shifted to piano, the band sounded like a mix between Lowell George-era Little Feat with a dash of The Band and a touch of the Black Crowes.” -Ft.

Wayside Drive’s 2nd full-length album “The Other Side” will be released for free digital download. One song will be available for free download every Tuesday until all 12 songs are released. With each single’s release there will be individual artwork, the stems for remixing, and a trivia poll.

The album was recorded and produced by the band and mastered at ES Mastering located in SugarHill Studios. On this album the band expanded it’s instrumental line-up adding sitar, tabla, doumbek, tin whistle, and more. Among the guest artists on the album are Houston’s own Aric Alan (formerly of Awaken From Falling) playing guitar on three tracks.

One song will be released digitally in multiple-languages and another will be breaking ground with a newly-invented musical genre. More details for those to come.

Track listing:
1. Last Dream I Remember
2. The Other Side
3. I Will Rise Above The World
4. Forgetting
5. I Don’t Belong Here
6. Revolver 9

Sweat Free Houston is a coalition of labor, religious, and other civic organizations that want the City of Houston to pass a sweat free ordinance. The objective of the ordinance is to ensure low-bid garment contracts do not encourage manufacturing in sweatshop conditions, and to level the playing field for public contracts by eliminating sweatshop exploitation as a competitive advantage.

The new album Letters in the Deep, produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, is anything but traditional and marks the metamorphosis of Cadillac Sky from a critically-acclaimed Bluegrass band to a band without boundaries. Over the past year, Cadillac Sky has explored a lot of new terrain live on stage and with the recent addition of David Mayfield on guitar the band has developed into one of the most exciting rock-shows around. That new energy also translated into the studio as Cadillac Sky began recording the new album in Auerbach’s studio, Akron Analog. The Akron sessions proved to be a pivotal moment for the band and Auerbach played an instrumental role with a hands-off production approach, totally concentrating on shaping the sound of the record. The result is an honest, breathing piece of art that is amazingly authentic and gut-wrenchingly real.

Letters in the Deep is scheduled for release nationally in June.

Get Ready Houston, Texas because the Flaming Lips are coming to town. Kudos to the Free Press team and Pegstar for pulling this together and sharing the love. I don’t know how the mainstream media can avoid this festival as its sure to be even more packed than anything we’ve previously seen. Slim Thug, Flaming Lips, Stars, RaRa Riot, Lympic System, Wild Moccasins, Fat Tony, Giant Princess, 30 foot fall, Young Mammals, Buxton, Black Congress, Ghost Mountain, B L A C K I E, Muhammad Ali, scroll down – Shit! Houston we’ve got a lot of badass bands ready to make a dent in this city. Houston, a city of millions of people are going to know somethings going on. Surely Houston’s Fox News, WB39, TheBuzz, 104 K.R.B.E., should want to spread the word. Right?

I hope so, because it only makes sense that when people begin to see a moderate amounts of success from these types of festivals – That more will come? Or someone is going to see that there is money in our scene and if so is that a good thing? Who knows, maybe we’ll start to hear Do You Realize on the Buzz, or get a few more venues opened up that aren’t doing covers of Papa Roach songs. I mean I heard the Pixies at Home Depot and everyone was still shopping the same. There’s a hell of a lot of uncertainty in this post. Obama Change? -Naaaah – This festival will do just fine.

And 4 months should be enough time for all Houston bands to start their screen printing, CD burning, Posters, Videos, websites, etc., if they haven’t already done so for SXSW. Also, by way of email -we got the news to spread the word For a limited time the first 500 passes for the weekend are ONLY $15 if you go to pegstar.net and buy your tickets now! This is a good deal as the price is sure to double- Anyone who stood in line last year should remember what a pain in the ass it was.
