What does San Serac mean, if anything?
“Serac” is on some glacier shit, and “san” is Spanish for “saint.” Any further than that and we’d be getting into some pretty heavy abstraction!
Aside from what’s on your myspace, what are your influences musically?
Lots of stuff, I love all kinds of music. But particularly relevant to San Serac music – Midnight Star, Fad Gadget, Maurice Fulton, Howard Devoto, Grace Jones, The Hot Mix 5…
What about socially, politically, or cultural?
Well I come from a D.I.Y. place for sure, that’s a huge part of my thinking. It’s handy cause I never have the right gear.
How long has SS been in action, and has it always been the current incarnation/lineup?
It’s just me, I’ve been doing it for about 7 years.
I see that you previously toured with Chromeo. Where did the tour take you geographically and how was the experience?
It was just a couple shows in Western Canada actually, but it was totally great. They’re really amazing live.
How many dates will you be playing with the Wilderness?
It’s a full U.S. tour, coast to coast
Will this be your first time to play Houston?
It is actually, I’m looking forward to it!
If you could be anything for 24 hours, celebrity, animal, plant, grand canyon, what would it be and why?
I’m terrified of transmogrification actually…
What have you been listening to regularly on the road?
Colin Newman “Commercial Suicide,” Kashif “Send Me Your Love,” Chas Jankel.
What have you been reading on the road?
Michael Chabon “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union,” Aleksandar Hemon “Nowhere Man”
How many releases do you have to date, and what is the connection between you and the other releases available on www.frogmanjake.com? Which releases are you most excited about and why?
To date, three albums and three 12″s (two of which are brand new). The connection is I run the label with my wife, so the music is usually by me or good friends. I’m pretty excited about the Stereo Image record, that’s me and my man Johnny Dark and it just came out a month ago. And Misty Roses’ new record is so wonderful, that’s being mastered now so it should be out in the winter.
San Serac is performing December 3rd at the Mink with the Wilderness, Fertile Crescent, Balaclavas, Guitars, and //Tense//.
