Danielson, Cryptacize, The Mathletes at Walters on Washington

What would you take for a pair of shoes?

If you weren’t at The Danielson show, where the hell where you?! The Mathletes, despite Joe and Jeff battling the flu, delivered their ever-energizing brand of comic book pop. If you have never caught the Mathletes, shame on you. Get out there and see them.

Cryptacize offered up minimalist tunes infused with melodies to ease the sorest of souls. Like the track on a mix tape that cools things down so you don’t blow your load too soon, Cryptacize was the perfect pick to open for Danielson.  Best summed up by Jaime of Giant Princess “They are the sound track to my dreams,” and that they were. I know what would play in my head as I slept that night.

There is something so inherently charming about a band wearing a uniform. When so many indie bands treat their audience with a kind of aloof disdain, it is extremely refreshing to see a band that values pleasing the crowd as much as Danielson does. From their whimsical, boy-scout-meets-flight-attendant uniforms to their detailed instructions for audience participation, their set was really fun in a way few indie shows are.   “This one is a clap along….” “This one is snap along……” “Snap slower!” “This one is a sing along…” As if I were part of the band I clapped and snapped and sang as did just about everyone there.

So, what would you take for a pair of shoes? How about a song written entirely about feet? (Flip Flop Flim Flam). That’s exactly what it took for Danielson to barter specially made shoes for the whole band from a European shoe maker. Makes me wish I could write songs . . . or make shoes for that matter.
